The so-called silver city, as Schwaz is often called, is first mentioned in documents in 930 as "Suates". Silver played a central role in the history of Schwaz. The "Schwazit", as the Schwazer dolomite is also called, contains silver and mercury-containing Kupferantimonfahlerz. The Franciscan Order was founded by Franciscus of Assisi and belongs to the "Middle Ages" "Mendicant Order". In the desire for sufficient pastoral care, the Franciscans were taken from Vienna to Schwaz, in order to persuade them to start a monastery. Thus in 1507 a monastery was built for the Franciscans. The brand motif shows the "Mater dolorosa" from the Franciscan church in Schwaz. This late Gothic sculpture of the painful Mother of God is from a Swabian artist of the early 16th century. It is the interior of the so-called "painter's altar" of the church.
