Until 1594 Luggau belonged to the parish of St. Daniel in the Gail Valley. Around 1578, Count Johann von Ortenburg tried to establish a fraternity of the Franciscans and subsequently to the parental rights of Maria Luggau. The first priests arrived in 1591, and three years later the Patriarch of Aquileia declared Luggau an independent parish. On the occasion of this occasion, the 400th anniversary of the appointment to the parish was celebrated on May 28th and 29th, 1994. Today Maria Luggau is an important place of pilgrimage and a very active parish, which has a religious education center in the border triangle of Carinthia-Tyrol-Italy.
