For the first time an Austrian table tennis world champion! In 1937, Richard Bergmann had won gold in men's singles, but at that time there were no Asians at the start. Werner Schlager is also the first non-Asian since 1997, when the Swede Jan-Ove Waldner won the World Championship gold. Werner Schlager is a nine-time ÖTTV champion, which represents a record in the Austrian Table Tennis Association.
