Josef Wallner brought the first skis from Styria to Saalbach / Hinterglemm in 1898 and thus set the starting point for the development of this region into an internationally recognized winter sports center. In 1914, the Saalbacher winter sports club was founded and already in 1931, the first ski school, the 1937 already employed ski instructors. The 45,000 overnight stays of that time are quite modest compared to two million in our day. In 1972, the place was awarded the first Ski World Cup race, which has since followed many international winter sports events. On 11 June 1988, the 36th International Ski Congress awarded the contract for the Alpine World Ski Championships 1991 to Saalbach / Hinterglemm.
