Fishing has been run by the oldest peoples of the world. The fisherman, who practices fishing exclusively as a sport, makes use primarily of the hand-fishing, which consists of a fishing rod, a line and a hook. Due to the growing number of interested people, the Association of Austrian Workers' Fishing Associations was founded at the end of the twenties. At the international level, too, new organizational structures for sport fishing have emerged. On February 22, 1952, the first international gathering of sport fishing took place in Rome, at which the Confederation Internationale de la Pêche Sportive (CIPS) was founded. At the inaugural meeting, 20 national sport fishing organizations from as many states participated. According to its statutes, one of the main tasks of the CIPS is the organization of international competitions in sport fishing and the establishment of guidelines for the international and national competitions of the CIPS. Until 1978, 24 World Championships were held in sport fishing. In April 1977, the Congress of CIPS decided to hold the 25th World Championships in sport fishing in mid-September 1978 in Vienna. The Association of Austrian Workers' Fishing Associations made such a request on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. The special postage stamp shows a motif from the Middle Ages. It is to represent Emperor Maximilian in the exercise of sport fishing.
