Immediately after the First World War, the first handball championships were founded in Austria. The General Assembly of the Austrian Athletics Association created in 1922 a handball committee to life. At this time, the handball teams active in the workers' sports association already wore championships and also had international game contacts. The rapid development of handball in Austria in 1925 led to the establishment of its own organization independent of the ÖLV, the Austrian Handball Association, since 1932 Austrian Handball Federation (ÖHB) is called. The first major world event of handball took place during the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, in 1938 the first world championships were held in handball. In 1977, the ÖHV in 139 clubs with 588 teams reported about 10,000 handball players. The indoor handball world championships of the group B took place from 25 February to 6 March 1977 in completely different places in Austria and represented a big challenge for the responsible organizers of the ÖHB.
