26 years after being elected capital of the Olympic movement, Lausanne itself became an Olympic city. From 9 to 22 January 2020, Lausanne will host the 3rd Winter Youth Olympic Games, the second largest winter multi-sports event. Around 1880 athletes aged 15 to 18 from over 70 nations are expected to attend. The competitions in 16 disciplines will be held at different venues in Switzerland and France, but the centre of the games will be Lausanne. The opening ceremony, award ceremonies and closing ceremony will also take place here. The mascot Yodli was created by the École romande d'arts et communication (ERACOM) and thus by peers. The Olympic values are at the heart of the Games: excellence, respect (for others and the environment) and friendship (cultural exchange), but also Swissness. In addition, gender equality and sustainability are to be put into practice. The new building for the Olympic Village will become the VORTEX student residence after the Games, and the Vaudoise Arena, the new multi-sport facility in the Espace Malley, was planned long before and will continue to be used.
