The special stamp series »German Painting« introduces important German art works. The current stamp shows a detail from a small triptych. This is a "folding picture" in which the center piece can be closed with the side wings attached to the left and right. The painting was created around 1350 for the Cologne monastery of St. Klara by a Cologne workshop and can be seen today in the permanent exhibition of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum - Fondation Corboud in Cologne. Among other things, the triptych shows the biblical scene on the left wing inside, in which the Three Wise Men worship the Infant Jesus ("Apparition of the Lord" on January 6). The depiction of the figures, the folds of their clothes and the color scheme of the picture are influenced by French art.
