Special Olympics is an international sports program for mentally and multiply disabled children and adults offering year round training and competition opportunities. This initiative began in 1968, when the first International Special Olympics Games were organized at the Soldiers Field Stadium in Chicago, USA. The 5th World Winter Games of the Special Olympics were held from 20.-27. March 1993 in Salzburg and in Schladming. 1,600 athletes from 50 nations of all continents took part. "Let me win! Even if I can not win, I'll try courageously!" This Special Olympics motto places the integrative idea of this initiative in the foreground and helps millions of disabled people to participate more actively in social life.
