For the first time, four well-known personalities, who have rendered outstanding services for the benefit of the general public, with the help of their portraits, have been abandoned for the first time. The term should be understood in the future and include certain groups of people and occupational groups. As a personality was for 1956 Prof. dr. Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis, the discoverer of the cause of childbed fever and his successful fighter, elected. The 10 + 5 Pf value carries his portrait. The three remaining values are dedicated to the midwife, the mother and the nurse. The charity stamps, which are developed each year in close association with the consortium of leading voluntary welfare organizations - which also benefit from the supplements - dispensed with the involvement of an artist competition. The in Freiburg i. B., the seat of the consortium, resident graphic artist Bert Jäger has designed the series. In this case of a well-defined task, this limitation to a single graphic artist has worked well. Therefore, the procedure should initially be maintained in the future.
