Water is one of our livelihoods. Thanks to its climatic and geographical location, Austria is one of the most water-rich countries in the world. But it is only by maintaining the quality of the water that a sufficient supply of population and economy can be guaranteed in the long term. The objective of water pollution control is to restore the possibilities of use, which are already severely impaired by pollution, and to secure the available water reserves for the further development of our country. The matter of water law in legislation and enforcement is a federal matter. The most important legal basis for water protection is the Water Law of 1959. With this law, the cleanliness provisions were expanded, strict regulations for the protection of groundwater for the water supply and new regulations with regard to the water body supervision, which refer in particular to the water police and the water quality supervision. An important instrument for the preservation of the Austrian water quality is also the Water Management Fund, which has set countless activities in this area since its foundation in 1959.
