On September 12, 1683, the Ottoman army was defeated at the gates of Vienna devastating. The soldiers of Sultan Mehmed IV were routed and Vienna saved from conquest by the Turks. When the sultan's army set out from Istanbul on March 31, 1683, a rapid victory race followed. In a surprisingly rapid advance Kara Mustafa had led the Ottoman army before Vienna. Already on 7 July this year, General Feldzeugmeister Ernst Rüdiger Count Starhemberg, who had been appointed fortress commander, arrived in Vienna. Through his wise preparation and the deployment of his troops, it was possible to prevent the conquest of Vienna by the Ottoman army until September 1683. But the city's situation worsened day by day. In this threatening situation formed on 11 September 1683 the Entsatzheer under the supreme command of the Polish King John III. Sobieski in the Wienerwald to liberate the beleaguered city. On September 12, Vienna was freed and the Ottoman army defeated.
