The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF - United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, now the United Nations Children's Fund) was founded on 11 December 1946 to provide emergency relief to children in devastated post-war Europe. Austrian Post supports with the new special stamp UNICEF Austria - the supplement of 2.32 Euro will benefit the UNICEF refugee aid projects in Syria and the surrounding region.   "If Europe is to have a future, then something must be done for these children," said Herbert Hoover, co-founder of UNICEF in 1946. He referred to the countless children of Europe, who suffered from malnutrition, tuberculosis, rickets or anemia after the Second World War, had no warm clothes or were homeless. With the help of UNICEF, these children could be provided with food, clothing and medical help - so the survival of many Austrian children was secured. In 1953, UNICEF was established as a permanent specialized agency of the United Nations and was subsequently used mainly in Latin America, Africa and Asia for needy children. Health, nutrition, clean water, school education, child protection and emergency help, as well as help for self-help are still important concerns of the organization today. In 1989, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted, emphasizing the needs and protection of children in all policy and social decisions. Today, UNICEF is active in around 190 countries worldwide. In 1962 UNICEF Austria was founded as part of the global UNICEF network; The association is financed exclusively by donations and the proceeds from the sale of greeting cards.
