In 1996, the Luther memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg (both Saxony-Anhalt) were recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The Birthplace and the Death House of Martin Luther (1483-1546) are located in Eisleben. In Wittenberg are the Luther House, the Melanchthon House and the Castle Church. The five buildings are important stations of Luther and the history of the Reformation. The birthplace in Eisleben is considered one of the oldest history museums in German-speaking countries. On the portal of the Wittenberg Castle Church Luther is said to have posted on October 31, 1517 his 95 theses, which are seen as the starting point of the Reformation.
