On the island of Reichenau in Lake Constance, Bishop Pirmin founded a Benedictine abbey in 724. The new monastery became one of the spiritual and cultural centers of the Holy Roman Empire. The most important scholars of her time taught at the Reichenau convent school. The valuable books of the monastery library, the goldsmith's art of the monks and their murals in the churches were famous throughout Europe. In November 2000, UNESCO listed the monastery island of Reichenau as - according to the explanatory statement - »outstanding testimony of the religious and cultural role of a monastery in the Middle Ages« in the list of world cultural heritage.
