The Berlin Museum Island is a unique historical, architectural and urban building testimony. The design is based on an idea of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of 1841. He wanted to design the Spree Island in the heart of Berlin as a "sanctuary for art and science". Today the ensemble consists of five buildings: Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Bodemuseum and Pergamonmuseum. They were designed by outstanding German architects. In December 1999, the entire complex was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Current renovations should secure them permanently.
