The architecture and art school »Bauhaus« was founded in 1919 by Walter Gropius. It stands for the functional as well as aesthetic design of everyday objects. Scholarship was initially in the designed by Henry van de Velde buildings of the former art school and School of Applied Arts in Weimar. In 1925 the school moved to Dessau, in 1926 the Bauhaus building designed by Gropius was inaugurated. It is considered a pioneering example of modern architecture in the early 20th century. At the same time, the "master houses" were built as dwellings for the teachers of the university. The Bauhaus sites have been a World Heritage Site since 1996.
