The imperial Schlossanlage Schönbrunn with its outbuildings and the extensive park is due to its long and quite eventful history one of the most important cultural monuments in Austria. The entire listed ensemble, which includes the castle, the park with its numerous park buildings, fountains and figures, as well as the Tiergarten as the oldest in the world, were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. The history of Schönbrunn and its predecessors dates back to the Middle Ages. The entire property has been called "Katterburg" since the beginning of the 14th century. Emperor Matthias took advantage of the area for hunting and is said to have discovered on one of his hunting trips in 1612 the Beautiful Well, which finally gave Schönbrunn its name. Since Maximilian II in the possession of the Habsburg ruling family, the palace complex was after the end of the monarchy in the possession of the Republic and was managed by the castle's main team Schönbrunn. In 1992 the Schloss Schönbrunn Kultur- und BetriebsgesmbH was founded and entrusted with the administration of the castle, whose owner is still the Republic of Austria.
