On May 29, 1948, the United Nations Security Council (UNSCR) approved the establishment of the United Nations' first peacekeeping operation in its Resolution 50 (1948), and since 2002, the International Day of United Nations Peacekeeping Operations has been celebrated on May 29 to include those women and men who are or were in the service of peacekeeping, for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage. In addition, the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal of the United Nations will also be posthumously awarded to people who lost their lives in the service of UN peacekeeping. The first deployment of UN peacekeepers took place in the Middle East in 1948: UNTSO, the UN ceasefire monitoring organization between the Israeli and Arab warring parties, is still in operation today. Since then, the UN Peacekeepers have worked in 71 operations. Every deployment must be preceded by a resolution of the UN Security Council, and the participating countries or conflict parties must agree. More than 120 countries have been involved in operations of this kind so far, and more than 3,300 people have lost their lives. At the suggestion of UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld in 1960, during the Congo crisis, the peacekeepers used the now-familiar blue helmets labeled "UN" for the first time - since then they are also known as "blue-helmet troops". In 1988, the United Nations Peacekeepers were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their commitment to securing world peace. - Austria also provides peacekeeping forces: by the end of 2015, 188 people from the police and military sectors had served the UN.
