The illustrations show excerpts of the cityscapes of Aachen and Saarbrücken and a look into the harbor of Bremen. The state capital Saarbrücken, which today performs an unifying function between Germany and France, emerged from the merger of the former cities of Saarbrücken, St. Johann and Malstatt-Burbach, which united in 1909 to form the city of Saarbrücken. The various characteristics of these former single cities have come together in today's cityscape: Baroque church towers are reminiscent of the times of the old princely residence. The "Old Bridge", which has been leading over the Saar for centuries, still connects the districts of Saarbrücken and St. Johann. The epoch of the rising bourgeoisie at the turn of the century speaks from the proud, neo-gothic town hall tower, and the towering cubes of modern buildings show that the old tradition of the business and administrative center has continued to this day. The building of the Saarländisches Staatstheater is representative of the central function of the state capital also in cultural relation. The unmistakable reference to urban development beyond the old city limits is the high-altitude residential city of Eschberg. The close connection with the industry, which has been based on indigenous mineral resources for centuries, is intended to convey the symbol of the winding towers.
