Stephan Eberharter was born on 24th March 1969 in Brixlegg and started skiing at the age of four. The whole family showed great enthusiasm for skiing, including his father and his two brothers. His great talent was already evident in his first race, which he played at the age of six. He knew he wanted to be a racer. After the ski school in Neustift, he attended the ski school in Stams. With the title of Austrian young champion and winning the European Cup overall ranking in 1988 Eberharter made the leap into the national team. In 1991 he became double world champion in the Super G and in the Alpine combination in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. After this success, however, a longer dry spell arose, but Stephan Eberharter did not give up, fought his way through the European Cup, regained the overall standings in 1996 and was fully back in 1997. At the Olympic Games in Nagano / Japan he won the silver medal in giant slalom, beaten only by team mate Hermann Maier. In 2000, Eberharter was hit back by a knee injury, but he focused on the 2001/2002 season: Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games / USA: Gold in Giant Slalom, Silver in Super G and Downhill Bronze, and also World Cup Overall Winner , Winner in Downhill and Super G World Cup. Although he had previously been rumored to have resigned, he successfully continued this successful series in the 2002/2003 season by winning the Overall World Cup, Downhill and Super G World Cup, even though he suffered a bone contusion in his knee shortly before Christmas. There is no doubt that Stephan Eberharter is one of the great athletes that Austria has produced in skiing.
