Annette von Droste-Hülshoff was born on January 12, 1797 at Schloss Hülshoff near Münster as the daughter of an old Westphalian Catholic noble family. Already at the age of seven, she was considered a literary prodigy. Nevertheless, her first volume of poetry was published in 1838. In the poem cycle "The Spiritual Year" of 1839 she represented the tornness of man between enlightened consciousness and religious search dar. It was made famous by the 1842 published crime novella "The Jewish Beech", which is one of the best German realistic tales of the 19th century. Characteristic of the texts of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff is the sliding together of dream and reality as in the poem "Moonrise", written in 1844. The poet died on 24 May 1848 on the Meersburg on Lake Constance.
