In the heart of Wernigerode, right on the market square, stands the late Gothic half-timbered house. First mentioned officially in 1277, the "gimnasio vel theatro" once served the Count of Wernigerode as a "Spelhus", court and place of entertainment. At that time, as well as today, those willing to marry could make a knot here. After 1427 the building passed into national ownership, it was completely rebuilt. It got a massive quarry stone front, another floor was put on the house, and the two turrets, landmark of today's town hall, were completed in 1498. As a city hall at that time was still another building, but in 1528 fell victim to the great city fire. Whereupon the Wernigeroder decided to make their "Spelhus" the town hall.
