Industrialization is central to the economic and social development of developing countries. For this reason, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) was founded on 17 November 1966. As the developing countries became more and more aware of their tasks in the following years, the goals of the UNIDO had to be redefined in order to ensure optimal support for development work. These were set at the second general conference held in Lima, Peru in 1975. The UNIDO was created as an autonomous organization within the United Nations. At the Lima Conference, a transformation to a specialized agency was recommended in order to work more effectively. The UNIDO is based in Vienna and aims to increase as little as possible the small share of developing countries in total world production. At the end of 1975, 81 nationalities were represented in the UNIDO Secretariat.
