The most striking landmark of the city of Feldkirch (Vorarlberg) is the shadow castle depicted on this brand, which was known as Schloss Feldkirch until the 17th century. But even before this time the name Schattenburg occurs. The word "schate" means "protection" in Middle High German. The oldest parts of the castle, the Warta Tower and the mansion, date back to 1200. In the following centuries, the castle was reconstructed and rebuilt in several stages. Particularly interesting are the additions from the 16th century, because on them can be seen the effects of the changed warfare by the advent of firearms. The most recent changes took place in our century, trying to preserve the old character of the castle. Particularly noteworthy is the mighty tower, which is up to three and a half meters wall thickness and a height of more than 22 meters characteristic of the original task of the Schattenburg: securing the city of Feldkirch and traffic over the passes to the south and east. This tower was a lookout tower, shield on the attack side and retreat in case the enemy invaded the castle. He served only as a defense tower, but never as a residential tower. Therefore, he has only loopholes and no windows.
