This stamp from the series of Austrian monuments is dedicated to the town hall in Steyr (Upper Austria). From the eastern row of houses of the impressive town square in Steyr, the magnificent town hall rises as the dominant building. It had been completed in the spring of 1772 after seven years of construction. The four-storey main building is equipped on its side with the city coat of arms and a clock and divided by Colossal pilasters and windows. A rich grid surrounds the balcony above the magnificent portal. Six allegorical figures, exquisite stone carvings, ornamental tower and Gesimsbalustrade. Presumably they come from the workshop of the sculptor Johann Paul Sattler from St. Florian. The construction of the rear wing, which encircles a spacious courtyard, continued intermittently until the fall of 1778. In the building on the outer side of the building, the meeting room, decorated with a charming stucco ceiling, was set up, where on 16 October of that year, for the first time, the Council negotiations took place. As far as can be concluded from the still existing records, the town hall building cost an estimated 40,000 guilders, which corresponds to an amount of 15 million shillings. For this, Eisenstadt Steyr can claim to own a masterpiece of Austrian Rococo with the town hall. The brand image shows the town hall in Steyr.
