The Residenzbrunnen or Hofbrunnen, as it was formerly known, was built under the great fountain lover Cardinal Guidobald Graf Thun (1654-1668). Georg Andreas Boeckler described the fountain in his fountain book "Architectura Curiosa Nova" (Nuremberg, 1664), dedicated to the Archbishop of Salzburg, as the "most beautiful and largest in Germany". 1656 to 1659, the water pipe was made, 1658 to 1661 completed the construction. Only after construction of a new water pipe in 1682, the well was fully functional. The brand image shows in the background the so-called Neugebäude with the bell tower. It is also a landmark of Salzburg and forms a counterpart to the residence. The tower was built between 1592 and 1602 under Archbishop Wolf Dietrich as a princely dwelling quarter and expanded in 1670 by the construction of the former court library. The carillon was set up under Graf Guidobald's half-brother, Archbishop Johann Ernest Graf Thun, at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries.
