The name Ludwig van Beethoven is inseparable from Heiligenstadt, which has been part of the 19th district of Vienna since 1892. The master had life-long worries about his home and changed his apartment nearly fifty times in his life. Also in19. District were still preserved in 1962 five houses in which Beethoven had lived temporarily. The house (Vienna, 19, Pfarrplatz 2) presented on the stamp should stand representative of the other Beethoven houses and, above all, has a picturesque location on Pfarrplatz. Beethoven lived here only two months, in May and June 1817. Subsequently, he moved to the house Kahlenberger Straße 26, where he lived until October. Here was the reworking of the trio in C minor (op. 1, no.3) to the quintet. More meaningful than the previously mentioned houses is the house in Grinzinger Straße 64, where he and Franz Grillparzer lived in 1808. As a particularly noteworthy house in Beethoven's music, the house in Döblinger Hauptstraße 92 must be viewed, because here he composed the 3rd Symphony (Eroica) in the summer of 1803. Probably the most significant building in Beethoven's life is the so-called "Testamentshaus", Vienna, 19, Probusgasse 6, in which he wrote the letter to the brothers Carl and Johann on October 6, 1802, which went down in history as the "Heiligenstädter Testament" and testimony to Master's extraordinary emotional stress from the looming loss of his hearing.
