As an old border town on the Illfluss, directly adjacent to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, Feldkirch, which is situated on historic ground, has always been Austria's gateway to the west. High above the city is the historic landmark of the ancient castle of the Counts Montfort, the Schattenburg. Overall, Feldkirch still offers a historic cityscape today. With its castle, the old city walls and towers, the ornate churches and patrician houses, its marketplace and its quiet court and side lanes, it has remained at the core of a piece of medieval history. Particularly impressive is the old, probably built around 1270, Churer Tor, which is also seen as a brand image. The six-storey gate tower with the outside arched door has a covered masonry above the gate. On the outside, the tower is covered by a renaissance gable, which has been broken several times, while on the city side, a gable roof with a simple stepped gable sits. Towards the city, the tower is presented with a three-storey porch, which continues along the city wall on the right. There is also a round staircase built. This wears the Feldkirch coat of arms in a Rollenwerkkartusche with the year 1591, the year in which the Vorwerk was built.
