The Niedersächsische Landtag has its seat in the Hanoverian Leineschloss since 11 September 1962, which is characterized by the historical changes of the past centuries like hardly any other building in Lower Saxony. Since its first construction in 1637, the building has served as a monastery, castle and seat of government, poorhouse, hospital, school, mint, magazine, barracks, thermal hall and museum. After its destruction during an American air raid on July 26, 1943, it was a ruined building for over ten years before architect Dieter Oesterlen redesigned it into what is now the Parliament building and integrated its "new centerpiece," a modern cubic plenary wing.
