The occasion for the "WIPA 2000" was the anniversary "150 Years Austrian Stamp". Exactly on June 1, 1850, the first stamps appeared in Austria. Five values were issued in Austrian currency, namely the values: 1, 2, 3, 6, and 9 Kreuzer, and five values in Italian currency: 5, 10, 15, 30 and 45 centesimi, intended for the then Austro-Hungarian Monarchy belonging to areas in Veneto and Lombardy. Austria was not the first country to issue stamps. This fame is due to England, where on 6 May 1840, the "Blackpenny" as the first brand in the world and two days later, the equally old, but much less famous "Blue Penny" appeared. The first brands on the European continent appeared in 1843 in the Swiss cantons of Zurich and Geneva. Brazil also released its first brands in the same year. Austria ranks eleventh in the series of brand-issuing countries. The "WIPA 2000" took place from 30 May to 4 June 2000 in the Austria Center Vienna. It was under the protection of the FIP (Federation Internationale des Philatelie), the patronage had taken over the FEFA (Federation of European Philatelic). This Vienna International Stamp Exhibition included all competition classes at the highest international level. To counteract the gigantism of world exhibitions of recent years, the "WIPA 2000" was limited to 2,700 frames of one square meter each. Here, the competition showed the best in collections, which is available worldwide. For the first time on a WIPA also collections in the. Open class. presented by the visitors with interest. A real attraction was the furnished "rarities cabinet". A special attraction, but not the only one, was the "Bordeaux letter". It is the only letter franked with a Red and a Blue Mauritius and probably the most expensive philatelic document of all time. But also Austrian rarities, such as "yellow" and "vermilion" Merkur, the Lombardy-Veneto switch sheet issue of 1850 and many other world rarities were shown. The official brand program of Österreichische Post AG was split over three years and involved in the positive conclusion of the "WIPA 2000" through the knock-on profits. That was the "WIPA 2000" - you are already looking forward to the "WIPA 2008" from 18 to 21 September 2008 in the Austria Center Vienna.
