Only one Austrian after Jochen Rindt has been able to become Formula 1 world champion to the present day, 3 times over the course of his career. With this achievement, his name is a household name, his face has become hallmark stamped by the 1976 accident at the Nürburgring. Andreas Nikolaus (Niki) Lauda was born on February 22, 1949 in Vienna and was interested in racing at an early age, much to the annoyance of his family. He started touring car races. From 1971 to 1972 he drove in March Ford his first Formula 1 race, starting in 1973 on BRM. During this time he learned a lot about the vehicles and gained a great deal of expertise, for example. about suspension and adjustment of the cars, which later benefited him at Ferrari. When Enzo Ferrari met him, he was impressed by the young man and offered him the big opportunity of his life: driving for Ferrari. In 1975 Niki Lauda drove twelve times in 13 Grand Prix races, winning 5 races and celebrating his first Formula One World Champion title in the Ferrari 312T. 1976 at the Nürburgring one of the most dramatic accidents of the Formula 1 history occurs. The Ferrari crashed into a cliff face, several cars collided with the vehicle, the gasoline ignited and the car started to burn. The unconscious Lauda could be pulled out of the wreck with severe burns and strong lung burns just by fellow drivers. His incredible will and best care let him survive, he was already 6 weeks later back in Monza at the wheel of a race car. After his 2nd World Championship title in 1977 there were more and more differences with Ferrari. Lauda parted from Ferrari and moved to Team Brabham. In 1979, Niki Lauda turned away from Formula 1 and founded his own airline, the Lauda Air, with two planes. Formula 1 caught up with him in 1982 and he started driving for McLaren. In 1984 he crowned his racing career with the third world title. In 1985 he finally finished the driver career. From that point on, he devoted himself fully to his company, although he was in the 90s as a side by side advisor to Ferrari and from 2001 to 2002 as racing director of Jaguar.
