The hurdle race in its present form is a relatively young sport discipline. Forerunner is the "Barrlaufen", a kind of obstacle running, which was operated in the 16th and 17th centuries in Germany. The first competition in the modern hurdles was held in 1898 at the Turnfest in Hamburg. Based on the English form, a hurdles over 100 meters was introduced. It was run over wickerwork hurdles of 1 meter height, which were placed at a distance of 20 meters. The technique of the hurdles was initially very primitive, but developed around the turn of the century already the basic forms that are still used today, such as the Einarmtechnik, the Doppelarmtechnik, the upper body depression and the extended Schwungbein. Today the men over 100, 200, 400 and 3000 meters, in the women over 100 and 200 meters run. In addition, there are still separate track lengths for the youth and the juniors.
