The issue of special stamps with surcharges in favor of the »Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe«, whose patron is the Federal President, is to help the social tasks of the foundation and the tasks in all areas of sport. The sports brands are dedicated this year to the theme »Great Sports Events 1983«. The founder of the modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, was also the creator of the Modern Pentathlon. Following the example of the ancient "Pentathlon", he intended to counteract one-sided specialization for pedagogical considerations. The Modern Pentathlon is an all-out competition in totally opposing sports - horseback riding, fencing, swimming, shooting and running. The disciplines are conducted on four consecutive days and in the order named (4th day shooting, running). Riding: Jumping over 600 m with 15 obstacles. For all participants the organizer puts the horses; they will be giving away an hour before the start; 20 minutes before the start the competitor is allowed to climb his horse to ride off and get to know him. Fencing: Fencing on a hit with electrical indicator. A fight takes a maximum of 3 minutes. Every participant has to fight against everybody. Shooting: The weapon (revolver or pistol) has a caliber of 5.6 mm (0.22). It is shot on moving tens ring silhouettes. Shot distance 25 m; 20 shots are cast in four series of 5 each. The movable discs appear for each shot for 3 seconds at a distance of 7 seconds. Swimming: 300 m in any swimming style. Running: 4000 m cross-country run, where a height difference of up to 100 m is permitted. Start and finish must be in the same place. The runners start individually with one minute each. The German Association for Modern Pentathlon is the numerically smallest Olympic top federation (1,560 members) in the organization of the German Sports Federation. He can not be compared to any other association - he lacks the usual foundation, the broad base of the clubs. He is directly supported by the state associations.
