The publication of the special postage stamps with surcharges in favor of the Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe, whose patron is the Federal President, is to help the social interests and tasks of the foundation in all areas of sport. From 12 to 25 November 2008, the Chess Olympiad took place in Dresden. In the new »International Congress Center«, 150 men's teams and 120 women's teams played for the gold, silver and bronze medals. The Chess Olympiad is the world's largest chess team tournament. It is held every two years since 1927. After 1930, 1958, 1960 and 1970, Germany hosted the Chess Olympiad for the fifth time.
