The proceeds from the special postage stamps »For Sport« will benefit the Deutsche Sporthilfe Foundation and thus support the social interests and tasks of the Foundation in all areas of sport. The prelude to the 28th Summer Olympics marks the traditional torch relay. He started in May 2004 at the Greek Olympics. About 10,000 torchbearers made stops in all previous Olympic cities - including Berlin and Munich. On August 13, during the official opening ceremony, the Olympic flame was ignited in the Olympic Stadium in Athens. Until August 29, the Greek capital hosted around 10,500 athletes from 201 countries. Within 16 days, 301 decisions were made in 37 Olympic disciplines. Central venue was the Olympic Stadium, which is located about 25 kilometers from the center and has 74,000 spectators. There were also 32 other competition venues within a radius of 40 kilometers around Athens.
