The proceeds from the sale of the special stamp series »For Sport« will benefit the Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe and thus support the social interests and tasks of the foundation in all areas of sport. This year's sports brands are dedicated to »racing«. Horse racing is the oldest organized sport in Germany and Europe. The first gallop racing event on the continent took place in 1822 in the Baltic Sea resort of Bad Doberan. Horse racing became a popular leisure activity. Through betting opportunities he offers the spectators an immediate involvement in the sporting events. The annual betting turnover in Germany is currently about 850 million marks, calculated worldwide, resulting in a total of over 160 billion marks. In this country, about 75 percent of sales are re-distributed as betting profits. Gallop and trotting courses are located in many major German cities. The most important venues are Baden-Baden, Hamburg, Cologne, Frankfurt, Munich and Hoppegarten (gallops) as well as Gelsenkirchen, Recklinghausen, Hamburg and Munich (trotting).
