Table tennis is one of the young, modern sports - and is nevertheless popular all over the world. The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) is affiliated to 133 nations. In the 9675 clubs of the German Table Tennis Federation (DTTB), which was founded in 1925, over 700,000 players are organized. This makes the DTTB seventh largest association in the Federal Republic of Germany. Another five million citizens play in the Federal Republic of Germany outside of associations table tennis in the leisure time. The appeal of table tennis sports is based on its diversity: the game is among the fastest ever; it requires speed, strength, agility, skill, and stamina as well. In addition, table tennis is appealing in that it can be played singly and doubles as well as within a team and as mixed doubles. It is now an Olympic sport: in 1988, the celluloid artists were in Seoul for the first time. The World Table Tennis Championships, which have been in existence since 1926, are the world's largest indoor sports event in elite sports. For the 40th World Cup from March 29 to April 10, 1989 in the Dortmund Westfalenhalle, the German Table Tennis Association expects about 2,500 participants: players (over 600), coaches, referees, journalists and officials. The TT fans in the Federal Republic of Germany can expect a sports festival of high quality.
