The issue of special stamps with surcharges in favor of the »Stiftung Deutsche Sporthilfe«, whose patron is the Federal President, is to help the social tasks and tasks of the foundation in all areas of sport. The sports brands are in the sign of outstanding sports events in the Federal Republic of Germany this year. They show sailing (World Cup), Nordic skiing (World Cup), gymnastics (German gymnastics) and judo (World Cup). The sailing sport with its fascination can be operated as a regatta as well as recreational sports into old age. Due to the technical development - construction of plastic boats - and increased mobility, more and more people have been able to practice this sport over the past 25 years. Today, around 1,150 clubs with a total of 158,000 members are members of the German Sailing Association. German sailing is now recognized worldwide: The technology of the Cupper sailing in the Admiral's Cup or the Sardinia Cup is considered unsurpassed. In the dinghy and keelboat classes, the sailors of the Federal Republic of Germany have won numerous medals at the Olympic Games and at World and European Championships. In July 1987, following the Kieler Woche, the world's elite of sailing meets in Kiel to stage their World Champions in six out of eight Olympic disciplines and their European Champions in two. This is the first time outside of the Olympics that such a comprehensive event has become possible. Sailing is a technical sport that requires a lot of effort from the individual. Although the waters are naturally available, dinghies and yachts need berths, winter storage and maintenance. Sailors are considered individualists. Nevertheless, their sense of community, their awareness of reality and their work has created harbors, halls and clubhouses.
