Major Buildings in the German Democratic Republic 3rd Edition The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multicolored special postage stamps depicting significant buildings in the German Democratic Republic. 30 Pfennig value: Dornburger Rokoko-Schloß From the Dornburger Dreiklang, the three castles on a eighty meter high limestone rock on the Saale not far from Jena, the Rococo Schlößchen was selected. This architecturally and scenically attractive place, where three epochs of construction meet, is also closely connected with the work of Goethe. For him, Dornburg was both a place of refuge and a place of work, dedicated to him a museum in the Rococo Palace. The castle was given its architectural form by the ducal land builder Georg Heinrich Krohne, who built the building between 1736 and 1747 on behalf of a lavish prince. The modest building has six floors on the valley side and only two on the mountainside. The simple façade has a lively effect due to the fact that the house walls have been reset twice, giving the roof its finely articulated sweeping shape. This design should cause each room to open up to two or three directions. This is how an interplay of architecture and nature comes about, where even today every guest can enjoy themselves.
