Major Buildings in the German Democratic Republic 3rd Edition The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multicolored special postage stamps depicting significant buildings in the German Democratic Republic. 20 Pfennig value: wall pavilion of the Dresden Zwinger From the probably most beautiful German rococo architecture, the Zwinger, was selected for the brand image of the wall pavilion. The pavilions, as independent circular buildings, enter the closed quadrangle of this courtly representative building created by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann between 1709 and 1732. The sculptures are by Balthasar Permoser. Rarely in a building are the reluctant elements so happily united, seldom is the diversity so united into unity, and all gravity dissolved as here. The Wallpavillon already suggests the layout of the façade in its façade design. A vaulted roof confirms this impression. The vertical is emphasized by pillars dissolved into richly decorated pilasters. Round-arched corridors and windows swing between them and calm the rising trend. Through essays with vases between the projectiles, through statues and upright gables, all end of load, every weight is avoided. The many wall openings give the building a generous festive character.
