In 1950, the then Interior Minister Gustav Heinemann commissioned the establishment of the Technical Relief Agency (THW). Only two years later, the THW already had over 10,000 helpers in the newly formed local associations. Today, THW fulfills three equivalent auxiliary technical tasks: in civil protection, in the humanitarian aid of the Federal Government abroad and in the prevention of danger at the request of the competent authorities. The Federal Agency for Technical Relief is part of the business division of the Federal Ministry of the Interior. There are currently 850 full-time employees and more than 60,000 volunteers working in the management, the eight regional associations, 66 branch offices and 660 local branches.
