The German Life-Rescue Society (DLRG) was founded in 1913 in Leipzig. Their goal is to save people from drowning. With currently 770,000 members and sponsors in 2,200 local groups, it is the largest water rescue organization in the world. 50,000 volunteers work in indoor and outdoor pools, at bathing lakes and beaches every year for around 2.2 million hours of work. The DLRG conducts swimming lessons, trains lifeguards and explains dangers on the water. In the flood disaster of 2002 in southern and eastern Germany, the DLRG experts saved thousands of people from drowning and protected assets in the millions.
