Voluntary fire departments guarantee in Germany together with professional and factory fire departments one of the most effective rescue systems in the world. The first German Voluntary Fire and Rescue Corps was founded in 1841 in Meissen. Today, more than one million men and women are volunteers in some 24,700 fire departments. They provide technical assistance in accidents and natural catastrophes every year in around 500,000 missions, and are deploying around 200,000 firefighting missions. One of their tasks is fire safety education for school classes and kindergartens. In addition to adults, more than 250,000 young people are involved in over 16,600 local groups of the German Youth Fire Brigade.
