The stamp series »German Painting« presents important works of art by German artists. The current issue honors the painting "Self-Portrait in Fur Skirt" by Albrecht Dürer. He was born on May 21, 1471 in Nuremberg, studied among others at the then leading Nuremberg painter Michael Wolgemut and undertook trips to Italy (1494/1495 and 1505-1507) and to the Netherlands (1520/1521), which characterized his work , Albrecht Dürer is one of the most important personalities in the history of art and made the transition from the Gothic with its stylizing depictions of people to the Renaissance with their more realistic imagery. He died on April 6, 1528 in Nuremberg. Durer's main works include his self-portraits. He created the painting on the stamp in 1500. The way he portrayed himself as a self-confident artist was new and influenced subsequent painters. Dürer shows himself with a noble brown fur skirt. This could have brought him into conflict with the strict dress code of the then society, since such coats were reserved for nobles. The self-assured gaze and the right hand, which has been pointedly shown, presumably stand for the gaze and creative activity that Dürer himself described in writings as "face" and "hand."
