The 2019 Christmas Stamps not only showcase classic themes, they also stage another interesting aspect of Christian tradition: the colourfulness and dignity of a church window. The four special stamps depict typical Christmas motifs: a gift, a snowflake, a candle and a star. For their staging, however, the designer was unusually inspired by "church window geometries". Church windows? In the Middle Ages it was not yet possible to produce larger glass surfaces. In order to still be able to fit the windows of Gothic cathedrals, lead-glass windows were used. Smaller pieces of flat glass are joined together to form a whole by means of lead frames. The designer has translated this technique into a modern design language by means of fresh colours and large-format graphics. The resulting geometry can be seen in the individual stamps as an individual line grid in the background. The colours used make the stamps shine. This effect is further enhanced by the pigment printing inks gold and silver. They give the stamps additional festivity and elegance.
