An economical and rational use of energy has a particularly high priority in the overall energy policy spectrum. Saving reduces our dependence on imports, the energy sources are spared. And finally, saving energy also helps to reduce the environmental impact of energy consumption. The need to use energy sparingly and rationally is becoming increasingly aware to a broad public. So we are on the right track. Certainly not all possibilities for saving energy are exhausted. Especially in the field of construction and modernization, there are still a variety of ways to use energy even more efficiently than before and thus achieve significant savings. It is therefore important to put the existing and proven technical possibilities into practice. After all, the share for space heating in the total energy consumption of the Federal Republic of Germany is currently estimated at around 40 percent. This large proportion of space heating in terms of energy consumption underscores the importance of this energy-saving area of consumption. How much of this can really be exploited depends not least on how well the individual knows about the benefits and costs of the various energy-saving options. An important task of the energy saving policy is therefore also to contribute to the improvement of this knowledge. (Text: Federal Ministry of Economics, Bonn)
