A few years before the appearance of this special postage stamp, the "oil shock" at the turn of the year 1974/75 made all Austrians and the whole world aware of the importance of careful use of the Earth's energy reserves for the future of our planet. The measures taken by the oil-exporting states (OPEC) had led to bottlenecks in the supply of crude oil at that time. Under the impact of these events, political leaders worldwide promoted measures aimed at reducing dependence on energy imports. Among other things, in November 1974, the International Energy Agency (IEA) was founded by the governments of the western industrialized nations. This organization proclaimed October of 1979 the "month of energy saving". All member states were called upon to show the public, through massive educational work, all those ways that lead to a rational use of energy. As part of this information activities, this special postage stamp "Spart Energie" was published by the Austrian Postal and Telegraph Administration. The glowing match symbol on this "energy saving brand" should clearly indicate that the energy supplies on our planet are limited.
