Rational use of energy To promote the efficient use of energy, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues a special postage stamp. Special cancellation from April 21 to June 20, 1981 Rational use of energy Already at the VIII. Party Congress of the SED in 1971, the economical and rational use of energy was defined as the decisive task of the socialist energy policy of the GDR. Significant results have since been achieved. The primary energy cost per unit of national income produced decreased by about 30 percent over the past decade. 680 combines, enterprises and institutions of the GDR work in terms of energy management exemplary and transmit their good experiences to other companies. 550 energy consumption norms influence progressive energy consumption indicators for newly developed products and processes. Last year, Secretary-General of the SED and Chairman of the State Council of the GDR, Comrade Erich Honecker, described it as "a vital issue to further significantly reduce specific energy consumption". There are many reasons for that. The scarcity and renewal of oil, especially in international markets, and the growing costs of extracting our most important energy source, the lignite, require us to achieve significantly higher results in the future with regard to the rational and economical use of energy. That is also a question of economic importance for the economic policy of our country. While the duration of energy efficiency rationalization measures is one and a half to two years, it is 15 and more years for large coal and energy investment projects. Rational and economical use of energy is a task in the interest of all citizens of our country and the core of our further energy policy. In the process, we will continue to devote a great deal of effort to expanding our energy base, in particular lignite mining and the development of nuclear energy. In the future, the energy rationalization results should be doubled compared to what has been achieved so far. Therefore, the technological processes are analyzed in each combine and operation, and from this rationalization measures are taken to reduce energy consumption and to elaborate standards based on technical and economic reasons. In all competition objectives of the combines and companies, questions of the energy, material and raw materials economy have a priority place. The use of waste energy in many production processes, for example to preheat the combustion air in industrial furnaces, will enable energy savings of up to 30 percent. Based on the experience of such combines as the Leuna-Werke "Walter Ulbricht" or "Carl Zeiss" Jena, it is important to ensure the further increase in production with consistent or lower energy consumption in the next few years by purposeful rationalization of the processes. Based on the realization that designers and designers decide on over 80 percent of energy consumption, international best-in-class energy consumption levels are to be achieved in the development of new products and technologies. This is of increasing importance both for the future energy consumption in our republic and for the exportability of our products. For household appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators, the further reduction of specific energy consumption is also of great importance because it significantly influences the growth rate of energy consumption in our households, which today accounts for almost one quarter of the total energy consumption of the GDR. So it's about thinking and helping to use energy sparingly and efficiently.
