Between the 17th and early 20th centuries, the Brandenburg-Prussian rulers in Berlin and Potsdam as well as in the Mark Brandenburg built magnificent palace and gardens. Among them are the castles of Sanssouci, Neues Palais, Marmorpalais, Charlottenburg, Glienicke and Rheinsberg with their surrounding parks and gardens. The garden landscape stretching from the Park Sanssouci to the Peacock Island in Berlin was added to the UNESCO list of natural and cultural heritage of the world in 1990. This wealth of Prussian art and cultural history is maintained today by the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg.
